Vessel Safety Check Program (VSCP)

Members of the United States Power Squadrons do Vessel Safety Checks for recreational boaters!

The Vessel Safety Check Program is an effective, proactive preventative safety program unique to the recreational boating community. It insures that key marine safety equipment is present, is within prescribed functional limits, and is compliant with Federal, State, and local regulations. It provides the examiner an opportunity to discuss with the recreational boater, the purpose of the marine safety equipment, to clarify various Federal, State, and local regulations, to emphasize specific safety procedures and practices, to answer any boating related questions and to encourage additional boater education.  The VSCP is a joint program between USPS and the United States Coast Guard Auxilliary.

VSCP examinations are performed by Certified Vessel Examiners in the local area.  A detailed report is issued at the conclusion of each examination.  This report shows the boat owner what was checked, and areas that may need to be improved.  All vessels passing the VSCP examination are issued a VSC decal like the one shown above (but for the current year).  This decal shows that you are a conscientious boat owner, concerned with the safety of those in and around your boat.

What is a Vessel Safety Check?

It is a free check of a vessel’s equipment for compliance with federal and state safety requirements. The vessel examiners performing this service have been trained to look for some of the more common problems, which might occur in your boat or its associated safety equipment. Some of the items we check are;

    Proper display of numbers
    Registration/Documentation
    Personal Flotation Devices; Life Jackets
    Visual Distress Signals
    Fire extinguishers
    Ventilation
    Backfire flame control
    Sound producing devices
    Navigation lights
    State requirements
    Overall vessel condition

If a vessel meets all of the Vessel Safety Check (VSC) requirements it is awarded a VSC decal.

Boating Safety Education

During the Vessel Safety Check, the vessel examiner will discuss with the recreational boater the purpose of specific marine safety equipment, will clarify various federal and state regulations, will discuss certain safety procedures and practices, and will answer any boating related questions. Some of the topics discussed are;

    Accident reporting
    Charts and aids to navigation
    Survival tips
    Fueling and fuel management
    Float plans Weather and sea conditions
    Availability of boating safety classes
